Picnic Must-Haves
Eating outside on a sunny day is a simple way to enjoy the season. When packing for a perfect picnic, be sure to include these essentials:
- Ice packs to keep foods and drinks cold
- Utensils for both serving and eating
- Napkins or hand wipes
- A bag or two for dirty dishes and trash.
Double-check that you have a large blanket to spread on the ground, and apply sunscreen before you leave.
America's Symbols
If asked to name some of the country's most iconic symbols, you'd probably come up with the bald eagle or the Statue of Liberty. Can you name some other emblems of the U.S.? Nature-related national symbols include the rose, the oak tree, and the American bison. "The Star-Spangled Banner" is well-known as the national anthem, but did you know John Philip Sousa's "The Stars and Stripes Forever" is America's official national march? Famous patriotic landmarks include the Liberty Bell (Pennsylvania), Gateway Arch (Missouri), and Mount Rushmore (South Dakota).
Make Your Mornings Meaningful
If you're someone who struggles to get out of bed in the morning, try this trick to make it a little easier to rise and shine: Add something special to your morning routine, such as grinding coffee beans for the perfect cup; doing yoga or meditating; reading or journaling; doing a multi-step skincare routine, or rocking out to a wake-me-up playlist. Even if you have to get up a bit earlier to do your special ritual, planning something you love to do right away can help you jump out of bed with more enthusiasm.
Made in the Shade
Make sure your eyes are included in your summer care routine by choosing a good pair of sunglasses.
Look for lenses that block 99 to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays. Keep in mind that a darker lens doesn't necessarily ensure that UV rays are blocked. Polarized lenses can help reduce glare, but polarization doesn't equal UV protection. So check the tag to make sure your shades of choice will keep your eyes safe.
Fit matters! Sunglasses can be fun for looking cool, but the fit is just as important for eye health as it is for style. Look for large lenses or wraparound styles to provide the most protection for your eyes.
Turn Over a New Leaf: Low-Maintenance Houseplants for You
Do you want to turn your home into a houseplant paradise, but don't know where to start? Luckily, we've got the dirt on popular plants that are commonly found and easy to care for.
Philodendron: This large-leafed plant species is great for warm, humid spots like bathrooms. Many varieties will trail or climb, adding a tropical lushness to your space.
Spider plant: The skinny leaves on this houseplant resemble a spider's legs, but there's nothing frightening at all about its care. Spider plants bounce back easily from underwatering and will grow in different levels of light.
Snake plant: Here's another plant with a name that some folks may find scary, but that is very forgiving to lackadaisical care. This means you can place it in a dim corner and rarely water it, and its long, spiky leaves will continue to grow upward.
ZZ plant: Don't snooze on this funky plant, which grows glossy, deep green leaves on thick stems. Like snake plants, you can forget about the ZZ plant from time to time, and it will still thrive.
Cast-iron plant: As its name suggests, the cast iron plant is practically indestructible, preferring low light and minimal watering. It's also fairly resistant to pests! Growing a few feet tall with large, dramatic leaves, a cast iron plant will liven up the corner of any room.
Pro Plant Tip!
Too little water is better than too much. Always check the plant's soil with your finger, and only water it if the first inch is dry.
