Choosing the Right Sunglasses
Rocking a cool pair of shades is an easy step to feeling fashionable, but be sure your sunnies provide the best protection for your eyes. Even if your eyes aren't bothered by bright light, sunglasses are still a smart choice for everyday wear. Pick a pair that protects you from both types of ultraviolet rays, UVA and UVB. Larger frames and wraparound lenses cover more of your face and will block more sunlight. When participating in activities where glare can be a problem, such as driving or spending time near or on the water, polarized lenses can help.
Stay Cool at Home
On summer's hottest days, make your home cool and comfortable with a few tips and tricks. Close off rooms so air only flows through the spaces your family uses most. Keep blinds and curtains closed during the day to block the sun's rays. Place fans strategically to create a cross-breeze that blows across your space, and keep spray bottles of water close by to give yourself an occasional cool mist. Taking a lukewarm shower can help you cool down before bedtime.
Pesto, Change-O!
Go green in the kitchen by using produce you may usually toss - such as celery leaves, carrot tops, the fibrous stems of leafy greens, and wilted fresh herbs -to make a rustic pesto. Traditionally made with basil, olive oil, garlic, Parmesan cheese, and pine nuts, pesto can take on many new flavors by mixing in various greens and subbing in walnuts, almonds, or sunflower seeds for the pine nuts. Combine the ingredients using a blender, food processor, or mortar and pestle, then use the fresh condiment on pasta, pizza, sandwiches, toast, and grilled meats.
Summer Stargazing
When was the last time you took the time to really look up at the night sky? Getting out from under the bright lights of civilization and going to check out the night sky in all of its glory is a fun and relaxing activity to do this summer. Make sure the sky is clear, grab some blankets or lawn chairs, and drive as far away from the city lights as you can. Set up your viewing spot and look up! You may want to download the Sky Guide: View Stars Night or Day app on your smartphone. This app allows you to point your phone at the night sky and instantly learn about the constellations, stars, and planets you are looking at above. And, if you see a falling star, don't forget to make a wish!
Supportive Sandals
Wearing sandals is a great way to stay cool during hot weather. Sandals often don't offer a lot of support, however, and can cause joint and back problems. Look for sandals with a sturdy strap, slight arch, and a thick footbed to get the support you need.
Beloved Ballpark Traditions
Watching a baseball game comes with many familiar customs that make the ballpark feel like home. Enjoy these stats about the origins of some MLB traditions.
Concession stands. Chicago's Wrigley Field, home of the Cubs, is the birthplace of permanent concession stands, which started in 1914 with a single kiosk that offered hot dogs, peanuts, and popcorn. Along with these classics, today's popular ballpark snacks include nachos, soft pretzels, cotton candy, and ice cream.
Foul balls. The owner of the Chicago Cubs, Charlie Weeghman, was the first team owner to allow fans to keep foul balls hit into the stands, starting in 1915. Most ballparks had ushers retrieve the balls so they could be put back into play.
Numbered uniforms. Dating back to 1916, teams had struck out with wearing small numbers on their uniform sleeves. Then in 1929, the New York Yankees had more visible 12-inch numbers sewn onto the backs of players' jerseys so fans could identify them. other MLB teams followed their lead.
Night games. On May 24, 1935, the lights were turned on for big-league baseball's first night game, held at Crosley Field, the home of the Cincinnati Reds.
The wave. This sports stadium staple was an accidental invention by professional cheerleader "Krazy" George Henderson. While pumping up the crowd at a hockey game, some sections had a delayed reaction in rising to their feet, resulting in a wavelike motion. Henderson experimented with recreating the wave, and It was captured on film for the first time during the national TV broadcast of a 1981 playoff game between the Oakland A's and the New York Yankees.
Recipe: Cheesy Stuffed Peppers
Ingredients:
- 4 red bell peppers
- 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, divided
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 4 cups diced mushrooms
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 cup shredded Oaxaca or mozzarella cheese
Directions:
- Move your top oven rack so that it's a few inches below the broiler and set the broiler to high.
- Place whole bell peppers on a baking sheet and rub them with 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Put the baking sheet under the broiler and cook peppers for 12 to 15 minutes, turning them every few minutes, until they are charred. Remove peppers to a bowl and cover with aluminum foil.
- Use oven mitts to move the oven rack back to its original spot. Turn off the broiler and set the oven to 400° F.
- In a large skillet, warm the remaining 1/2 cup of oil over medium heat. Add onion and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add mushrooms, garlic salt, and black pepper and saute for about 10 minutes.
- Uncover peppers and peel away charred skins. Slice off tops, remove seeds and fill each pepper with mushroom mixture and 1/4 cup cheese. Arrange peppers in a baking dish, replace the tops, and bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until cheese melts. Serve over cooked rice.
