How to Save Household Energy

Unplug Electronics

  • Many "instant on" household appliances, like TV's, use electricity even when switched off. Unplug these appliances or turn off the power strip they are plugged into.
    • Potential Annual Savings: $200 per household

Turn Off Lights & Fans

  • Leaving lights on when no one is in the room or at home wastes electricity. The cooling effect of a fan is only beneficial when it is blowing on you. TURN THEM OFF!

Moderate the Thermostat

  • For summer time, raise the thermostat by just two degrees during the day this summer without sacrificing comfort. Turn it up 10 degrees at night and when you're not home.
    • Potential Annual Savings: $200 (or more).

Wash in Cold Water

  • About 90 percent of the energy used for laundry goes to heating the water. Some stains demand hot water, as do bed linens (to kill dust mites). Wash all other loads in cold water.
    • Potential Annual Savings; $300.

Change Light Bulbs

  • Compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs consume a quarter of the electricity of regular light bulbs and last up to 12 times longer. Maximize savings by changing at least five frequently used bulbs to CFL.
    • Potential Annual Savings: $60.

Energy Savings Add Up!

  • The above savings total $760 per year. That's $7,600 annually for 100 apartments.
